Startups are often looking for people with marketing, sales, and executive experience, so board positions are available for those who want them. There's an important tax benefit to consider: if you take a board position and move to Portugal for more than 183 days per year, you can qualify for the non-habitual residence 2.0 program. This program offers a 20% flat rate on Portugal income and 0% on income earned outside Portugal, and there's no inheritance tax in Portugal, which is good for estate planning. However, board of advisors positions don't qualify for these tax benefits. Taking a board position is not required for the Golden Visa and is only relevant if you want to move to Portugal full-time. That said, if you're interested in it for its own sake, it can be fun and fascinating work.
